We were going to require more fuel efficient cars (which, in all fairness, are available) and develop alternate fuel sources.

The future looked pretty good for the corn farmers, and cars like the Vega, Pinto, Volkswagen, Colt (probably the best Dodge in a long time, sad that it was built by Mitsubishi) and Renault among others.

Public was firm in it's resolve to never again be held oil hostage.

Oil dropped, the ethanol addives were portrayed as evil fire water for our cars, we forgot, and a gas-hog SUV in your garage (even if you hauled nothing larger than your spouse) became a new yuppie status symbol. Yeah, I know, we gotta take the kiddies to the soccer game, and our increased consumption calls for more shopping bag space, but look how much has to be spent to widen parking slots! How DID people EVER make it before these shiny behemoths of the highway make their appearance?

Stange, huh? Kinda like dejavu all over again.
