It's obsolete because Microsoft can no longer ship its JVM with its OS. Therefore they're no longer updating it.

As for the chipper chat, it still needs a JVM to run within the browser. So how else is Java suppose to run if you don't have it installed especially if Microsoft is no longer shipping it with its OS?
