My Great Uncle Billy Weir owned the Riverside Club in Casper, Wyoming in the early 1940's. He was a wiry little local amateur prize fighter. Came out of an orphanage in Iowa. He spirited my great Aunt Margaret away from Huron, South Dakota and went to Casper where they had the notorious Riverside. In 1945 they made the decision to head to Vegas. On the way they got married in Elko. How romantic.
Big scandal in the family. He worked as a pit boss at the Golden Nugget for years. Did lots of other stuff. Retired then came out of retirement and did work for Summa Corp at Silver Slipper and Landmark. Then to Reno when they bought Harolds Club. In Dwayne Kling's book about Harolds Club, "A Family Affair" he is mentioned in less than a favorable light.
Lot's more to tell but I'm really tired...Anyway here is an ashtray from the joint...This is probably from after he owned it, but maybe not. There were some monogrammed chips I can remember seeing when I was really young as we got to play with them.
Casper had a notorious history of gaming, prostitution, and I guess anything that stunk, made noise or was illegal. Their Sandbar area was really notorious...There is a book about it...
Nice tray..here's the auction(not mine)
The original Riverside burnt to the ground around 1971-72 and was never rebuilt...
