I freely admit that I work for a major network, and I freely admit it’s a network you probably don’t respect. I’m OK with that. But what I know, and anyone on this board who has ever met me knows quite well, is the simple fact that I don’t like to be surrounded by people who agree with me. I prefer dissent. The network for which I work hires people with intellect, education, and opposite points of view and sets us up against each other in an effort to properly represent the American people. We all believe that truth is best found as a residue of intelligent people arguing.
That’s why I hate Fox News and yet still watch it for at least four hours every day. Fox represents a major part of America that I want to understand, even if I disagree with them. Fox believes only one opinion counts.
I believe that democracy means respecting those who beat you in an election. Bush won, and he is my president, and I will die to defend his presidency, because I respect America. And I just happen to disagree with him. But I respect democracy.
What bothers me is that the Fox folks don’t give credit to me and my friends. They think leftists are all anti-Bush. They’ve never thought of the idea that we love America and hate a particular president, and are willing to support him as a representative of America.
