I agree Thompson was important, but I think the media downplays the deaths of people out of the public eye, and especially those who most people on the street would not recognize.
Strickland (though I have no idea who this guy is) was on TV at the time (I guess). Johnny Carson, although a recluse for years, was a nightly guest in most people's home for years. Although Thompson might have touched a number of people over the years, I think the media (especially television) are going to be hard pressed to devote their precious time to him.
After devoting their time to the important news about Brad Pitt and Prince Charles, there is very little time for other things.
