No one really answered to the problem which is proper scan size. A single chip should be about 10K bytes. A group scan should be 100-300K bytes. If you are getting pictures that are 1 meg bytes you must save them as a .jpg format to reduce the image size. That is where the picture handling programs come in. You should have gotten one with the camera.
