Was skimming one of my favorite sites http://www.gamingfloor.com/ which linked me to a message board discussion about Wynn's upcoming RFID chip adventure. A sample post :
RFID works by the reader exciting a sympathetic response in the tag (which is itself unpowered, though it rectifies the incoming RF energy to self-power), this response modifies the reader's waveform signal, overlaying an incredibly weak (roughly 1% of the incident waveform) signal on top. It is this weak modification to the reader's signal that has to be extracted and deconstructed into a bitstream.
Well shoot, I was a'thinkin you could hold one of those radio chips up to your ear and hear like, Neal Diamond singing Cracklin Rosie... guess not.
Anyway, the Messsage Board http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/02/10/1954245&from=rss provides a lot of food for thought if you're interested in the subject. Wonder if this is really going to fly. From some of the information gleaned from this discussion, I wonder if this RFID business has been oversold to casino operators as a nice moneymaker for suppliers and service contractors.
Also, note the format of this message board. Posts get rated! For instance, you earn a point for being "insightful" with additional points for "extra insightful modifier" and the "Karma-Bonus Modifier" is an easy point also.
