What!?! How can you consider eBay to be "thieves"? They offer a service that is both popular and the best in their field. They have every right to charge whatever the market will bear for that service (which is EXACTLY what every auction seller, at ANY auction, is doing - getting the best price the market will bear.

No one is forced to sell their items on eBay. Only those who chose to pay the fees will do so. Those who choose not to may sell their wares in any other of the millions of markets available in the world today. Of course, they probably won't receive the prices they receive at eBay, but then that's what the fees are for, isn't it?
