My sister did the same thing two years ago. Very serious. One of the worst days of my life. She couldn't cope with the death of our mom just two days earlier. Obviously there were many underlying problems here. Too long and complicated to get into in this forum.

Long story. Long road to recovery. Today she is leading a normal life and has an entire new outlook on life. It took being held in a mental hospital for four months, but the care and treatment she received changed her life.

It changed all of us for ever. Bad start to the story but a very good ending. A tough road lies ahead for you and your family, but the end of the journey can be and will be very rewarding.

Keep the faith. All will be well with time.
