Here are the results of a statistical analysis on completed chip auctions on eBay, for a sample of 200 chip sales over two different arbitrary periods. The auctions selected were those for single collectible chips only, up to $100 in face value. No such collectible chip was skipped (except possibly in error) for any reason while going over the chips within a time period.
- Of the 200 chips auctioned, 112 were sold.
- Of the 112 chips sold, 53 sold at the starting price, 59 received more than 1 bid.
- The sum of the starting bids for the 200 chips was $1452.55 (an average of $7.26/chip).
- The sum of the sales prices for the 112 chips was $1569.29 (an average of $14.01/sold chip, but an average of $7.85/chip placed on auction)
- Expected average return from collectible chips placed on eBay for auction: 8.03%-fees.
- eBay fees for items that sell for $7.85: 5.25% of final selling price + $0.35 (therefore 4.46% of $7.85) insertion fee, not including any fees for spruced up pages or extra images, adding up to 9.71%.
- Final expected average return: -1.68%
