In a lot of cases they are meant & used just to keep the ACLU off of a lot of people's backs. I just heard where Macy's instructed everyone to no longer wish anyone a "Merry Christmas" while they are working in the store.

And...

"It's a happy, wonderful and magical season for all of us"

Not so much so for a lot of people who no longer feel comfortable just saying "Merry Christmas" or in Macy's case were told not to. Andy - Las Vegas
