On southern plantations the cook house was usually a seperate building. The cooked food had to be carried to the main house when ready. There were often dogs on the plantation that bothered the cooks who carried the food. To distract the dogs they tossed them small deep-fried cornballs which became know as 'Hush Puppies'.
