Tonight’s selection is actually a re-post but for good reason as you will see further down. The note is a 1999 issue 2,000 Lei from Romania home of the Count Dracula . It is an unusual note because it is made of a plastic polymer film. A problem with paper currencies is that they wear out the more they are circulated and it costs money to replace them. The United States replaces nearly 3/4 billion ONE-DOLLAR bills each year, the life of a ONE is only about 18 months. Multiply this with the cost of 6¢ PER NOTE to produce that is a hefty cost. Australia and South Pacific countries were the first to use the plastic polymer produced in Australia, and later other countries (ExxonMobil produces "DuraNote" that many countries print currency on). Tests and actual circulation has proven these notes can last an average of 10 years! They go through the washer/dryer better, ATM's, Bank counting machines, and change machines. Plus they are much harder to counterfeit. Yes, they do cost more to produce but it is only slightly more and the costs savings are tremendous.

The Romanian note shown tonight again is 2,000 Lei. Many European countries use a decimal where we use a comma. The front of the note depicts a map of Romania and the path of the 1999 solar eclipse that passed directly over Romania making it one of the darkest places on earth at the time. The two 'starburst' are transparent windows in the note for security against counterfeiting. The upper right corner is the issuing bank's logo and is used as a "watermark". The back depicts the solar system and upper center is the issuing bank's logo in the upper left is Romania’s coat of arms. Collector book value on these notes is $1.50 UNC. They are selling on eBay circulated around $2.
