Maybe I should join the modern world and try Photoshop some day. I think I got free copies with other things I bought over the years. LE version of many of the photo programs come free (well so called free) with every digital camera I've bought.

But, on the web, there are a bunch of Free, shareware editors, that will accept TWAIN and do everything a chipper would want to do. The best one I have found, which isn't crippleware (the 30 day free trial stuff and then it self distructs) and reasonable if you want to buy it later, is called irfanview. It's easy to follow and not a memory or resources drain.
