Mac (Harold E. ) and Carol McMurtrey owned Mac's Place from around 1947 til sometime around 1966. Then Carol's sister Bunny Johnsrude bought the place from them. Bunny sold it sometime in the 80's and it is now the Log Cabin Bar.
The bar and hotel was known as "The Gould" before Mac bought it. The First National Bank was on the ground floor on the left side of the building: the bar, the poker room in the back and storage were on the left side of the building. Upstairs were the hotel rooms, baths and an apartment where Mac and Carol lived until 1955 when they purchased Barkell Hot Springs in Silver Star. They then moved to Barkell's. For many years, they ran both establishments. I remember lots of parties and special dinners held at Mac's Place. People from all over the country came to many of them. Mac was also in the cattle business, so there would be cattlemen from all over attending some. They were quite involved with other businesses up and down the valley, from Dillon to Virginia City. Mac also owned a gold mine just east of Virginia City for a time. He was a busy man ...

I was born in 1955. I grew up in both places, mostly at Barkell's. They used the apartment in Twin on weekends occasionally. I remember playing with the dice on the tables in the poker room, as well as putting on some childhood play for the patrons of the bar...

Mac ran the gambling at Mac's Place, but also took the gaming to Dillon during Labor Day, as well as other little towns during fairs and such. He had the chips made in Butte as far as I know.....as well as wooden nickels at a later date for Barkell Hot Springs. He designed neon signs for the businesses as well.
