Most token collectors of the early Franklin Mint issues are aware of the error made in the $5 tokens in 1967... the made tokens that said Harolds Club, Las Vegas, Nevada. These were remade with Reno marking and many collectors sent back their error for the corrected one (and many did not!).
It appears there is also an error, or at least a documentation error in the 50c tokens FM made for Harolds Club two years later. The entry in the 1970 FM Numismatic Issues catalog is shown below, and it indicates that 20,000 halves were made in brass for casino use and 2917 in Franklinium for the 1969 proof sets.
Next to the catalog entry is a scan of the orange card used to hold the 1969 proof token. It indicates all tokens were made in brass, and that there were only 2600 proofs made. The token in the holder is obviously not brass. It also has a plain edge, not partially reeded as indicated on the holder.
So, several possibilities:
There were 317 proofs made in brass and distributed by the casino. All the others in the collector sets were Franklinium.
All the tokens were made in brass except for 619 proofs which were made in Franklinium. Some of these got into the "brass" proof set holders accidentally.
The proof holders were printed wrong and all the tokens were Franklinium. However, I don't know of a single Nevada 50c gaming token that isn't brass.
CT Rodgers new reference book on FM tokens indicates all were made in Franklinium. Did you find another source to verify this, C.T.?
I don't have a partially-reeded circulation strike to look at. Does anyone else? I'd trade this proof for one if it's in nice condition.
