the trick is using a high dpi. 300 or 400 or even 500 dpi. When you save the file, don't use the 100 percent quality setting. If your software gives you a slide bar, pick 60%-80% of the possible scale. This changes the compression rate. There's a big drop in file size as you drop the percentage down, but you still keep lots of detail. You'll see plenty of detail at 60 percent. Play a little bit and you'll figure out the best for your scanner.
