The problems usually arise when you are trying to use new technology with the old software.

For instance, some programs simply will not recognize a USB device etc and/or insist that a mouse, printer, joystick, etc be at a certain port or using a specific IRQ. In many cases, you can work around these problems but clearly in others you can't without upgrading or patching the software.
