MAYBE this is what happened.

Did you by any chance open one by right clicking 'open with'. If you did it may have set acrobat as the default application for pdf files which means they wont open with anything else. Ive done it myself with other applications.
You need to find the control panel or system file that holds the 'file associations' and dis-associate it.
