Thanks for the good news Mark! I know I'm gonna be looking for this book. It may sound like a dry and boring subject but Dwayne Kling and his editor really give you more than you'd expect in these oral histories. Kling of course, did Bill Harrah in Every Light Was On and Pappy, Harold, Raymond and Jr. Smiths in A Family Affair as well as the encyclopedic The Rise of the Biggest Little City. Order through the link at the bottom.
Kling's more polished interview technique and improved editing from Harrah to the Smiths should make this a very interesting book. The interviewees themselves come through in these chapters, making it easy for the reader to see the context of their remarks. Kling is a long time Reno gambling industry participant and can direct the interviews to maximum effect. For instance, Harrah's ivory tower style of managment really chafed at some his employees, no surprise when you can read the spoken words of some hotshot egotist toiling at one of Harrah's clubs. Kling's frank discussion of cheating at Reno's casinos with one of his friends in the Harold's Club book is very entertaining as well as authortative. Small details inform: Harrah's Club had a recruiting office in Twin Falls ID. and Harolds Club recruited in Hollywood CA.! The unexpected: Every Light... A real example of how The Greatest Generation saved the world and came home and built the USA as we know it today.
Kling's books will really enhance your enjoyment of the hobby, start reading 'em today!
