Hey, I AM that guy! Looks like the blurb from one of my auctions.. but you cut off some of the best parts.. here is the whole thing:
Just a few words on Shipping & Handling
I have one of the most reasonable shipping rates on eBay for chips.. Shipping is just $1 for the first chip, and FREE for all other chips shipped with it.. that rate is the same for Canada and Europe as well.. no extra charges just because you don't happen to be in the U.S. No pumping up the Shipping and Handling fee to cover the cost of eBay listing and selling fees, PayPal fees, the high cost of Gas out here in California, my time to go to the post office, the cost of bubble wrap and other packing materials, the electricity to run the computer, depreciation on the computer and scanner, the cost of my mortgage out here in CA where I list the chips from, the cost of gas, food and hotel when I drive to casinos and pick chips up, my gambling losses at the casino, storage cost, the cost of capital tied up in the chip since acquisition, or the host of other reasons some sellers theoretically use to justify exhorbitant shipping and handling fees.. As a collector myself, I just don't want my chips handled that much and I don't suppose most of you do either!
Jim, I am glad to see you are checking out my auctions. What do I have to do to entice you to bid? I take PayPal (well PayPal balance transfers (Which shouldn't be a problem for a guy with your level of sales) and accounts that are linked to a bank account. Can't do that credit card thingy.. since most of the chips I sell are low priced I can't eat a paypal fee on every transaction and still keep fees and prices reasonable for all my other customers.) Don't tell me you just like to "watch" .. hmmm.. maybe this explains those couple of auctions where it showed I had a few watchers and noone ended up bidding.
I personally think $1 for each additional chip is a bit high, but as long as the seller clearly states his shipping terms in the auction I have no problem with it. Obviously I take the shipping fee into account and just bid a dollar less on each chip, or decide I don't really want a particular chip as much because of the shipping fees and therefor don't bid. Who knows, I probably would have not won it anyway and only bumped up somebody else.
I have won auctions from both Scott and Jim, adding some great chips to my collection. In both cases I have always received great service, excellent communication, fast shipping and the chips were extremely well packaged. I would certainly not let shipping fees keep me from bidding on their future auctions, but I might bid a bit lower when I take those fees into account. I really like that they have "real" austions with really low starting prices and no reserves.
As a seller I go back to what Scott said at the very top of this thread "Also, as a buyer, I like to pay a fair and reasonable price for s/h." I too like to pay a fair and reasonable price for s/h.. so I just looked at it from a buyer's standpoint and thought about what would attract me as a buyer to someone's auctions and came up with my shipping fees that way. I like sellers that combine shipping, so what better incentive than to offer Free shipping for all chips purchased after the first one? As a seller I want to encourage multiple purchases and maybe even a little bidding war. It is certainly easier to ship half a dozen chips in one package so I reward multiple purchases. The cost of shipping is more than covered by that first dollar.. Padded mailers are cheap when purchased in large lots, and what do the extra chips weigh.. maybe 2 or 3 chip per ounce.. which adds 23 cents to the actual shipping cost for every additional 2 or 3 chips.. I gamble a bit by offering the same shipping deal to my customers in Europe, Australia and Canada, but I can ship a single chip to any of these places for under a dollar and I am willing to lose a little on postage occasionally to get multiple sales. My customers certainly appreciate reasonable shipping. The key is to not make shipping and handling a barrier to a potential customer placing a bid.
I wish all buyers and sellers good luck in all their auctions.
