Have carried laptop on many trips overseas (then dropped it at home). Just make sure you carry it in a laptop case (soft one will do fine), and place it in the overhead bin (don't forget it there). Used to be some airport securities asked one to start it up, so keep it charged just in case. You may have to take it out of the case for the x-ray. Don't leave your charger/adapter at home.
