Here is the procedure when someone sends me a parcel from the USA:

(1) The Swiss Post has a contract, that they handle custom formalities for every parcel sent via USPS.

(2) If the declared value is more than about US$30, tax is due!

(3) For their mandatory service, the Swiss Post charge a customs handling fee of $ 19.53 !!!

(4) Customs charge 7,6% tax of the declared value. They further add shipping and handling costs to the declared value.

(5) When I receive the parcel, I have to sign, that I will pay for (3) & (4), because they send a separate invoice.

I have filed a written complaint against this policy with the Swiss Post and Federal Customs Office. Result: No reply! If I receive the same parcel with FedEx, UPS or DHL, the fee would be less than half the amount of $ 19.53! So far my personal opinion on government monopoly...
