The Menlo Social Club was bought in San Francisco by Elmer Remmer and his partners in (I forget the year). Remmer always retained 51% or controlling inerest in his partnerships. Although there was a general shutdown of the clubs in San Francisco in 1954 by Edmund Brown, the Menlo club was shut down in 1948 because they did not build a gymnasium, as promised in their originally filed prospectus as a Social club. The social clubs in San Francisco were supposed to do other things than gamble for money, but they turned out to be ,for the most part, de facto cardrooms.
