I am trying to scan some slides so I can submit additional pictures to Mike Poole's casino pictures page, but I can't get my Epson 1650 scanner to recognize the slides as "slides" and not "color pictures." If the scanner recognizes the slides as slides, it activates a backlight (revealed by taking out the white backboard), but, without it, the slides are way too dark to see anything.

Any suggestions?
