For those of you that know me, you know that I am 100% against slabbing. My convictions are strong enough that I chose to serve as Sec. of the Slab Free chapter I think that pretty much says it.
I'm torn between whether these Binion chips are truly slabbed by the definition we originally gave them which included the words "commercial grading of casino chips"
I personally do not view the word "Authentic" as a grade.
So I ask myself the question what makes this a slab? Is it the shape of the container? Is it the seller? or is it the pricing?
Lets suppose I purchased 1000 chips of an obsolete rack and put them into airtights and sealed the.
Would that make them slabbed chips?
Do I like what I am seeing? The answer is no but what I am looking at is the potential of this leading into what might be called true slabbing where a grade is actually assigned.
I am further concerned about the possibility of any casino that has an obsolete rack of following suit here and doing the same thing to cash in.
Unfortunately the only way we can fight this is not to purchase these items. The truth though is that these are being mass marketed and the vast majority of sales will be to unsuspecting everyday people thinking they are buying into something with great value appreciation like any other collectable.
I think there is more to fear if Casino's looked at the potential of turning unused chips into cash and allowed these chips to fall ino "the wrong" hands
