PGS is third in the Big Three companies that perform grading and slabbing of coins. The other two are NGC and the ANA. NGC and ANA slab mostly American Coins, but PGS has branched out into Foreign, Medieval, Ancients and now Chips and Tokens.
I collect Ancients, and I can't see how anybody could clasiffy a grade on an item that's usually listed as Average(VG), Very Nice(F) or Pretty Good(AG). Ive seen a slabbed Claudius graded as AG, when in actuallity the particular issue is always crude in production, and should have been graded F/VF.
The grading system for Ancients has always been arbitrary. There are some coins that really do fall within the regular ANA style grading system, but the majority fall within the lesser grades.
So here's PGS grading all this stuff. Do you think they actually hired on new experts to grade the different categories? I thought I was skeptical of them when they started doing Foreign coins, then branched into Ancients. But now they're doing chips and tokens?
Having been a coin collector for many years, I saw how the Slabbers ruined the hobby. I, for one, knowing what I know, would be extremely skeptical of a company that grades "Everything"! Not to mention the fact that I don't believe any Member or Chipper has ever been contacted by the Big Three, to do any evaluations for them.
"Slabbing Ruined the Coin Collecting Hobby, and I Refuse to let it Infect Chipping!"
"Stop the Madness NOW!"
