I know we agree and the general views of what's "obsolete" as used in the hobby would agree, but look in your dictionary.
The definition works the other way. More chips would be obsolete instead of less.
"no longer in use, no longer current, out of date"
All sorts of chips that are off the tables, would be "obsolete" even though we might see them again at the whim of the casino.
As far as the A.C. contention that a chip is never obsolete, because it can always be cashed in. That would be one argument from some people. In truth (see above) any chip that's no longer in use, is obsolete.
Huge can of worms, because them people may sell any old chip that was taken off the tables yesterday and say it's obsolete.
I need to make a link to your message. I have a message with Archie using the "R" word!
Yes they are obsolete. But they can still be cashed in. If we had a set of standards that defined _for casino chips and tokens_ what obsolete is, there would have to be a sub-clause explaining that AC chips are obsolete, even if they can still be cashed in for face value.
After all of that, we don't have a good definition of what's obsolete or any agreement. Why do we see these long threads debating the point over and over? Because a Chip Collectors idea of what obsolete means is not the same as what a dictionary says, and then there's Atlantic City.
I suggest we have a symposium at the next convention to debate and define Obsolete and Rare. And please don't expect me to be there or sit through it. LOL
