Although I have personally never sold a single item on ebay, I have always defended shipping charges regardless of how much they are.
Yes, in order to just break even on a $5 chip you have listing fees, selling fees, postage and all the other items you have mentioned above.
The best thing to do is base your top bid on a combination of your bid including the shipping.
No one holds a gun to anyones head forcing them to place a bid.
What I do object to however is when the seller has a description that is as long as the dead sea scrolls and attempts to hide the shipping fee in the text or for that matter lists no shipping fees at all.
