I do that occasionally to get the chips you wouldn't get in quantity by playing like fractionals and $2.50's. I have rarely had a problem although getting fractionals sometimes causes them to stop and think. I am sure that if you walk up to a table and try to get a stack or two they would flat out say no. Even the pit critters know that the chips cost more than the face value.
