Here's an easy way...
In Response To: Question on scanning chips ()

If you have one of the "thin" scanners, just turn it upside down and place the chips on the lid of the scanner. (This will probably work with a "thick" scanner too, I suppose.) What you see is what you'll get.

The only problems occur when you are scanning items with different thicknesses (like a matchbook cover next to a chip).
