I don't think the chips are unique to each player, but each position has it's own reader so that each bet placed in that position is tracked to that player, and recorded by big brother. I don't know how that would work at craps or roulette but the tables with specific spots for specific positions like BJ, Car. Stud etc. this would be quite easy. The pit boss would swipe your card, enter your position and you are being tracked by the computer.
