Yes, though fortunately not for too long! Was part of our summer training before senior year. Got to fire the 8 incher, though, at Yakima Training Center in Washington, while on training from Fort Lewis, Washington, the year before.

I was on the Operation Sea Dragon gunline (on the cruiser USS St. Paul) when the USS New Jersey arrived in 1968 and got to see her fire the 16" main battery a few times. This photo is of the New Jersey firing off the coast of Beirut Lebanon in 1984.
