I have been a collector of tokens for many, many years. Aroung the turn of the century and well into the 20th century shots of liquor were two for 25¢ hence two bits. If the patron drink an odd number of drinks or just had time for one he or she had 12 1/2¢ coming in change. Often the bar would give the patron a token good for 12 1/2¢ or a dime and a 2 1/2¢ token. The good thing for the bar was it could only be spent there. I'm guessing the chips in the 12 1/2¢ amount is for drinks.
