The darkness on the left chip does not look like it was originally on the chip, but rather, happened during the aging process of the chip. Perhaps from use? I don't think it's applied intentionally. I assumed the significant differences in the chips was in the alignment of the designs on the outer ring. You may be right. I don't know.
