In 1935 the motto "In God We Trust" appeared on the $1 bill. Only about half had the new motto as the engraving was changed in mid-year. In 1955 the law was passed the the motto would appear on ALL US coins and currency. Note it appeared on coins WAY before currency and the motto has been 'revised' since the original. What it started out as escapes me at the moment.
Question is: How long will it be before there is public outcry to remove it?
