If an employee wants any increses in benefits/compensation he is at the mercry of the employer, you just raise your fee (much easier). Slavery made slave masters very wealthy, that was abolished so we now exploit the poor or less fortunate insted. Did you ever LOWER your fee so more people could afford your services?
