Ricky explained Stu's question much better than I could have. Similar chips sell for different prices at various dealer tables at the convention. There isn't a single pricing standard for all chips ... nor should there be. Premium quality will always prevail over lesser quality in virtually every collectible; whether it be chips, tokens, coins, stamps, baseball cards, buttons, matchbooks, ashtrays, etc.
Chips with rim dings or other problems will sell for less than chips in pristine condition... which is why it is usually meaningless to cite past ebay price history against similar chips offered for sale unless the quality is known in both transactions.
