David,
You are dealing in semantics. From an accounting stand point I can call any account anything I want. If I designate it "building fund" it covers ALL possible alternatives. Generally accepted accounting principles leaves much latitude for account names.
I understand perfectly. If others need clarification I am sure they can speak up for themselves. All they have to do is post their question or concern on the club board and any one of the officers will answer it to the best of their ability.
David, Mike Q. prepares the clubs financial statements. He does a good job. I am confident any individual looking at them can fully understand his account titles, etc.
As far as the funds go, If for some reason the building fund project should collapse the club would probably ear mark the funds for another educational goal. All funds donated to a tax exempt organization can be utilized, as in our case, for ANY educational project. I would oppose a return of the funds to the General Account only because I would want them specifically utilized for an educational project.
