... Dave, great idea and I hate to rain on your parade , BUT:
>> Sometime after Labor Day I’m going to auction the largest
>> single lot of casino/poker/gambling chips ever assembled.
>> I’m going to auction the lot on eBay. The lot will consist
>> of (gulp) 500+ chips. Nope, that’s not a typo.
First (minor point) -- At 500 chips, this wouldn't be the largest single lot of chips ever auctioned. The special BF auction at the 2003 convention had 800+ $1 chips in it.
Second (major point) -- For a combination of reasons, the auction mentioned above did not generate nearly the bidding that was expected. In part, this resulted from the fact that it was conducted at the last dance trading session rather than at the regular auction. There just weren't many bidders there and at least one (Jim Steffner, as I recall) who intended to bid happened to be out of the room when the auction was held. I also think there would have been more interest if the lot price wasn't expected to be so high.
By putting this on eBay, you will probably avoid the exposure problem. However, it is my opinion that you would generate a higher total sale by breaking this into several auctions of perhaps 100 chips each (perhaps organized by chip type, geographical location or other logical category).
Food for thought. In any event, I will send you some chips to include. ----- jim o\-S
