I was at least 3 miles WEST of this one and out from under the storm cloud so I felt we were in safe place.

"Around these parts" tornadoes, particularly ones associated with a Supercell, will not deviate to the west more than a 1/4 mile so if you can get a few miles to the west side of the storm you're in good shape.
