I took a new job starting January. The only non-negotiable area was my being able to take off a week for the convention. Three weeks ago yesterday my boss (the owner of the company) had emergency open heart surgery and will be out another six to eight weeks. I am convinced that he did this for the sole reason of keeping me from going to the convention. Last year was my first and it was great!
