Pond is six years old, and I have had one winter kill event.

Lost six nice koi about four years ago. Since that time I leave the pump running which keeps a small fountain going in the middle of the pond.

That leaves a opening in the ice of about the size of a basketball. Have not lost a fish since.
Water depth is only two feet. If I had it to do over again I would have gone 36".
