I was reading an article on MSN regarding the fighting in Najaf today. I ran across the following sentence:

Motorists fled through deserted streets, honking their horns.

So... let's see here. We have deserted streets. In these deserted streets are motorists. These motorists, obviously frustrated by the lack of progress on these deserted streets, are honking their horns at nothing.

What am I missing here?
