Just popped on for a quick chip fix , and had to respond to this one. I got stopped last April. I had a bunch of chips in a ziplock baggie in my Backpack. I didn't know I should have taken them out and tossed them in the grey bin. Myself and bag were pulled aside at McCarran. A very nice, courteous and polite Female Security Officer questioned me as to what the dark mass might be in the bag. After several tries we figured out that it was the chips. In the same bag I also had a slew of Players Club Cards, and Bungee Cords. It must have looked like a Nightmare waiting to happen to them ! She laughed and said I should have known. She then offered to repack the bag for me. I told her no, you have other people you need to assist. She thanked me saying that most people get indignant. To which I replied why? You're just doing your job! I also thanked her for making sure I had a safe flight. I had trouble getting the backpack back on (it was very full), so while I adjusted my straps, she went and got my other carry-on for me! She didn't have to do that. That was very nice of her, and I agian thanked her. As I was walking away several of the checkers wished me a good flight. What could have been a tense situation, was diffused through politeness and respect. The guy behind me was having a fit because it was taking long at the check-in lines. He wasn't polite or respectful. They pulled him aside, patted him down and even had him remove his shoes for his check-in!
So what should I toss in the grey bin? Chips obviously, cell phone, GPS, camera, flash, extra batteries and exposed film? Luckily with the slower checking process, your stuff has a less likely chance of being stolen
I carry 2 carry-on bags. A standard Pilot/Steward sized bag, and a small backpack. The backpack is actually considerd a purse/pocketbook by the airlines, and does not count to your 1 carry-on item. I'll put all my stuff to be checked out in it. Also do not lock either carry-on bag, as the security personnel are suspicious of locked bags. I never check bags into the cargo hold anymore. If I ever go on a vacation to where I have to check an extra bag into cargo, it's gonna contain nothing but dirty laundry, nasty socks and smelly sneakers! All that stuff I can afford to lose! !
