WQFM was really a sad story when I was there. Hugo Koeth was the owner and the one who first started the station. He was in his late 50's and still lived with his mother. I worked there evenings running 4 hour long music tapes while going to college starting in 1970. Hugo wasn't much on sales and had very few needs. He only had one large customer - Dean Foods and his station was broadcast into all of the local Kroger food stores. After i was there a while he hired a new station manager who sold him a bill of goods. Typical rip off artist. He moved them into a fancy new building, had his new pool and carpet installed at company expense (or traded for advertising time) and eventually drove the company to the point of bankruptcy. It got to the point where we were not even paid regularly. I called the main office one day to complaing about no receiveing a check for 3 weeks and was told that how could I have the nerve to ask for money at a time like that. I found out about 10 minutes later that Hugo had blown out his brains with a .45 cal. gun that morning.
