Sounds like we have some common ground there.
I was a C64 guy all the way. Mowed grass all summer and saved virtually every penny to buy a C64. We didn't have a floppy drive or any magnetic storage device until Santa came that year. He brought us a 5 1/4" floppy drive. We did have a couple of cartridge games that we could play in the mean time.
Once we got the floppy drive, we started picking up some games from friends. We picked up a Temple of Apshai hack that had been copied over from cassette. The destination for save games was hard coded into the game, so we couldn't save anything at all. I hacked into the code, found the save routine, and modified it to write to the floppy. You're right, those were the days...
I should state here that I make my living off software now (duh). I do not, nor do I condone, hacking software.
