During the period of 1943-1948 Charles “Polly” Hunckler ran a gambling Joint at 119 West Court Ave. Jeffersonville, Indiana. E. R. Lowe worked for him at the 119 club.
A special thanks to Gaming Archeology for making the following information available to collectors.
In 1945 E. R. Lowe, while working for Hunckler at 119 W. Court Ave., received yellow T mold chips with the monogram 119 hot stamped in SILVER. I point out this color so that no one will claim that this was a gold hot stamp that had aged [deteriorated] and become silver. Today most of these chips show some degree of warping. This is probably due to being stored in an area of high heat and/or high moisture. A flood of the Ohio River in 1945 caused the temporary closing of downtown Joints Of Jeffersonville so storage in the above conditions may have been a contributing factor.
Another Taylor record shows that this 119 monogram had been used previously in 1941 for an order sent to Clinton Ill.
I believe that The Gaming Table also lists a 119 Land of Opportunity (location unknown, HORSHU mold).
That would make at least 3 places that could have been called 119.
It was common practice for casino owners to lease out games and split the “Take” with other gamblers. Therefore, many gamblers had their own set of chips. E. R. Lowe was no exception. Enclosed is a scan of his harp mold yellow chip. He also had black $25 and chocolate 50˘ so go to your unknowns and find one of each for me.
