The problems you get with a camera are that lighting is an issue. If you get over the top of the chip, shoot straight down as you should, you will block the light from above.
You can use side lighting and get nice shadows, which might make the mold actually stand out better.
Macro is the best, not zooming in from a distance. If the camera doesn't have macro, use close-up mode. That's what it's for.
Sometimes flash will work, most times it will over expose the chips. Not enough light and the picture gets grainy.
Honest... get a cheap scanner and you will find it's much better, faster, more consistant and saves all sorts of variations in lighting trouble.
