I'm not into cameras, but I'd look into usig the macro setting for closeups ( Macro AF: 5 - 46cm (2.0 in. - 1.5 feet) at wide-angle, and 30 - 46cm (1.0 - 1.6 feet) at the telephoto setting.). With my macro setting, I don't use zoom focus at all, just the macro setting..... ......... .......... I experimented on the lighting. I'm happy with GE Photoflood (blue) bulbs (item No. LMBCA) in a regular lamp -- they are expensive ($3), hot, and last about 3 hours. -- called " designed for movie light equipment." If you use them, do so for short intervals, and don't walk away from them when they are on -- can burn!

Easy solution.......
true, scanners convenient for chips,etc.
Just hold it under a lamp and rotate it

Use Macro - but buy a scanner is easier
